(Haskell County) -- Haskell County is home to the state’s first International Registration Plan Regional Office. The new regional office is located in the Haskell County seat of Sublette, a 5-and-a-half hour drive from the state capital.
Before last week motor carriers who operate out of Western Kansas had to travel hundreds of miles across the state to make changes to their International Registration Plan (IRP) account. Now, they have two options, in opposite corners of the state.
It was a successful start, with 20 IRP applications being processed on the first day alone. Haskell County Treasurer Nancy Weeks said so far it’s been a huge success.
“We’ve gotten so much positive feedback from the truckers that have been in the office,” Weeks said Friday afternoon.
“They’re just so thrilled to not have to make that long drive anymore,” she explained.
According the Kansas Department of Revenue’s Chief of Motor Carrier Services Deann Williams, one of the people who showed up for the regional office opening was so happy to be doing business closer to home that he actually had tears in his eyes.
Director of Vehicles Carmen Alldritt called the opening “one of KDOR's biggest success stories for 2OO9.”
An IRP account is an agreement that allows a fleet of vehicles to be registered in one state and travel throughout the United States and Canada. In this case, it would mean a fleet that is owned and operated out of Kansas could do business across the country. The fleet operator simply pays registration fees to the state of Kansas and the state disperses that money to the different states or regions where the vehicles travel for business.
