Frequently Asked Questions - Digital License Plate Production

DLPP stands for Digital License Plate Production process. License plates are created using a digital printer that prints letters and numbers on a background, then bonds the background material to the metal plate. This print on demand process produces a license plate that is flat rather than with raised letters and numbers.
Laminate material covers the printing to protect it from the elements.
Any license plate issued on or after August 1, 2018 will be produced using the digital printing process.
The Department of Revenue is always looking for ways to improve our processes and do business in a more efficient and effective manner. The print on demand feature of the new license plate production process will enable the Division of Vehicles to decrease waste by reducing inventory and only producing what is needed by Kansans.
License plates are included in the registration fees, so there will not be an increase in fees to the customer.
Existing license plates will not be replaced. Those who register a new vehicle without transferring a plate, or those who change from standard to specialty or personalized plates or vice versa on or after August 1, 2018 will receive the new digitally produced plate.
No. Embossed plates with current registration decals remain valid and do not have to be replaced.
Just like in the current system, you will need to visit the county treasurer motor vehicle office in your county to register your vehicle or request a specialty or personalized plate. County staff will process your registration and order your plate. The license plate will be produced and mailed to you at your mailing address.
Customers may use a mailing address different from their physical residence one time during the initial registration.
You should have your permanent license plate within three weeks of the date it is ordered. You may provide an e-mail address and/or a mobile phone number to receive a notification when your plate is ordered and when your plate is shipped. Notification that your plate has shipped will contain a tracking number with a link to a website so you can track the plate and know when it will be delivered.
No, you will not have to sign for your plate.
The plate will not be forwarded to your new address and will be returned to the Division of Vehicles. Contact the Division of Vehicles by calling (785) 296-3621 or by e-mailing kdor_tr@ks.gov. When your plate returns, it will be re-mailed to your new address. You may avoid having your plate returned by providing your new mailing address at the time your plate is ordered if you will be residing there within 10 days of the date you place the order. If you signed up for e-mail or mobile text notifications, you will also receive notification that your plate has been returned.
The plate cannot be forwarded to a new address. It is very important that you provide the address where you will be living when the plate comes in the mail. If you are not sure of the address where you will be residing, you may provide an address where you know someone will receive the plate.
The county staff will provide you with a paper temporary license plate which is valid for 30 days from the date you register your vehicle. The temporary license plate will be placed in a plastic “tag bag” and you will need to place the tag bag on your vehicle where the license plate would go. The temporary license plate will allow you to drive until the permanent plate comes in the mail.
You must use the 30 day temporary license plate after your vehicle is registered. The 60 day permit allows you to drive before your vehicle is registered. After the vehicle is registered, the 60 day permit is no longer valid and you must display the 30 day temporary license plate.
If you lose your 30 day temporary license plate or it becomes damaged and is unreadable before you have received your permanent plate you may contact your county DMV office and request a reprint of the 30 temporary plate. If you are requesting a reprint due to damage, please bring the damaged one with you.
If the plate is damaged or illegible you may visit your county motor vehicle office and request a replacement plate. You may be able to keep the same combination depending on the plate you are replacing. You will need to bring your current license plate, current registration, proof of insurance, and pay any applicable fees. You will be issued a 30 temporary license plate until your replacement plate is received in the mail.
